I came across the Danish artist Berndnaut Smilde's work a few years ago and when looking through a file of images I had saved onto my laptop I came across him again. Smilde works in a variety of mediums, from producing site-specific installation pieces through to sculpture and photography. He analyses space and the use of space and, much like Trisha Donnelly in her new exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in London, Smilde reacts and intervenes with the space he is confronted with be it a white cube gallery or a run down warehouse. Living and working in Amsterdam, his work tackles the ephemerality of art in particular through his cloud pieces which last only long enough for a photograph to be taken.
